About
- The Analog Vault // Essential Listening -
This collaboration between the son of Malian desert blues legend Ali Farka Touré and a Texan instrumental rock band may be unexpected, but the result was wholly inspired. Impressed by Khruangbin’s panoptic, fourth world music (a heady mix of Luk thung, Middle Eastern influences, dub, cumbia and instrumental rock) – Vieux Farka Touré ("the Hendrix of the Sahara”) teamed-up with the American trio on a beatific album that would pay tribute to his late father’s legacy.
Consisting of eight covers, Vieux and Khruangbin crafted hazy and luscious re-imaginings of Ali’s West African oeuvre. The synergy between Khruangbin’s soft-focus funk and soul, alongside Vieux’s sentimental and spartan sound proved to be magical - this album is one that evokes a deeply hypnotic affair that paints with a wider palette, but never loses the symbolic power of the originals.- The Analog Vault
Ali is a masterful work in which the love surrounding it is just as vital as the music itself, driving it to unforeseen places; Vieux and Khruangbin are spreading the good word to a completely new generation. “I hope it takes them somewhere new, or puts them in a place they haven't felt or heard,” Lee says. “It is about the love of new friendship and making something beautiful together,” Vieux continues. “It is about pouring your love into something old to make it new again. In the end and in a word it is love, that's all.” - Label
