About

- A TAV Essential Listening Album -

Dedicated to Shunryu Suzuki, the Sōtō monk who popularised Buddhism in America, this sophomore album from Austrian electronica duo Tosca is as zen as trip hop gets. Unlike their debut LP, Opera, which was opulent and sultry - their 2000 effort released via !K7 / G-Stone was much more delicate and laidback. Suzuki was designed to be a downtempo soundtrack to enlightenment, and it achieves such.

From the funky decelerated pulse of “Annanas” to the chilled out loveliness of “Ocean Beat” - Suzuki brims with tranquil warmth and hypnotic grooves. In contrast to much of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber’s catalogue, this record is notable for being mostly instrumental, featuring only breathy vocal samples that blend seamlessly into the mellow simplicity and light touch of the album’s hypnotic soundscapes. - The Analog Vault

Tosca's second album Suzuki takes a lighter, airier approach to the trip-hop terrain that Opera explored. The spare, shimmering title track's delicate synth textures, minimal beats, mellow rhythms, and breathy vocal samples set the tone for the rest of the album's laid-back tracks. Though "Orozco," "Bass on the Boat," and "Ocean Beat" are more immediate variations on Tosca's relaxed sound, for the most part, Suzuki offers a locked groove of hypnotic, deeply chilled-out epics. — (via AllMusic)
