About

Originally released in 1998 First Floor is Detroit/Chicago auteur Theo Parrish’s debut album. Released on vinyl in two parts for maximum playability; the raw bluesy, soulful offbeat grooves have long since buried themselves deep under the skin of the house community. Showcasing Theo’s innovative use of drum programming and effects its uniquely loose but taut knit of minimalist elements worked to maximal, hypnotic effect have solidified its reputation as a contemporary classic and served as a corner stone for Theo’s truly legendary status. First Floor is one of those albums that has transcended generic borders to influence heads of all stripes with its unmistakable soul-nuzzling texture and groove. Essential. — (via Label)

First Floor includes the complete contents of the two EPs Theo Parrish recorded for Peacefrog during 1998. After a perhaps excessively spare opener, the collection moves into a succession of excellent tracks ("Sweet Sticky," "Paradise Architects," "Electric Alley Cat," "JB's Edit") driven by distorted, scratchy, trance-like sample snippets borrowed from disco and jazz-funk. (The back cover even shows Parrish soaking in a bath of records with Ron Carter and Isaac Hayes LPs visible.) Parrish's ingenious use of drum programming and effects add-ons tie each track together just the way a great DJ should. It's the next best thing to seeing him spin. — (via AllMusic)

A perennial reminder to the raw-ass bluesy soul house stomp and wiggle of the GOATy two-part debut album by Detroit/Chicago legend Theo Parrish.

Now of a 28 year vintage, the ultimate collection of woodcut drums, burnished keys and soul-fired vibes in First Floor (1998) have aged like a cask oak-steeped single malt whiskey. It’s now a contemporary classic touchstone for deep house at its earthiest and most spirited, depicting Theo locked into signature offbeat grooves that have buried themselves deep under the skin and soundtracked countless late night soirées.

Future-proofed by its uniquely loose but taut knit of minimalist elements worked to jazzwise, hypnotic effect, you can practically taste the sweet smoke and tang in the air of each cut, spanning the lip-bitingly strong, heads-down hustle of ‘First Floor Metaphor’ at the front, thru the timeless deep house immanence of ’Sky Walking’ at the back. In between, ‘Sweet Sticky’ works nagging organ vamps and nattiest drums into a proper stank-face trample, next to the honeyed chords of ‘Paradise Architects’, classic sampler magick in ‘Love Is war For Miles’, a ‘JB’s Edit’ for the wall-bangers, and 10 mins of limb-unravelling tekkerz on ‘Dark Patterns’. Plus, obviously ‘Heal Yourself & Move’ the deepest alltimer, a track that feels almost like a second skin at this point.

It’s one of those albums that’s truly transcends generic borders to influence heads of all stripes with its unmistakeable, soul-nuzzling texture and groove. One for the ages, we tell thee. — (via Boomkat)
