About
- TAV // Essential Listening -
A distinctive album in Susumu Yokota's discography being primarily composed of samples from
classical compositions, accompanied by a gorgeous piece of album cover art that extracts a
detail from the beautiful 1896 painting Hylas and the Nymphs by John William Waterhouse –
the album cleverly samples various classical tracks including familiar classical pieces by
Debussy, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Saint-Saëns, alongside modern
compositions by John Cage and Meredith Monk. Yokota’s swooning 2004 album is a gorgeous
tapestry that’s as beautiful as it is idiosyncratic. Using bits and pieces of orchestral inspirations
as thread, Symbol weaves patterns that straddle somewhere between electronic and ambient in
its austere design - the album emerges a spellbindingly successful collage, one that’s soothing
in texture and rich with understated emotion.
