About
Second Woman consists of Turk Dietrich (of Belong) and Joshua Eustis (of Telefon Tel Aviv), two of the most exploratory and well-regarded electronic music producers active since the '90s emergence of leading IDM artists Aphex Twin and Autechre. Dietrich and Eustis' activity together dates back to the early 2000s. They previously worked together as Benelli, credited with a remix of Nine Inch Nails' "The Frail".
In June 2016 they debuted with a self-titled set on Spectrum Spools. It was previewed with "700358bc5," a bracingly rhythmic and intricate production. The album was met with critical acclaim, and was followed up by the digital release E/P, featuring remixes by Jlin and Fluxion, in early 2017. The influences of footwork, dub, and algorithmic music permeated the duo's second album, S/W, which arrived in April. Tresor Records released the duo's EP Instant/Apart in 2018 which more overtly hinted at the duo's techno roots.
The opening "100407jd7" wastes no time exhibiting mastery in both sound and structure, contorting the frequency spectrum into a psychoactive mirage with its mutating tectonics and vaporous tone clouds. Cuts like "200601je6" and "700358bc5" are bar-raising examples of veteran craftsmanship and vision, refining and reengineering the blue prints of their early works to create an original and dynamic album. The deliberation and control over every particle is obsessive, but the end results of each individual track unfold with an organic temperament unparalleled in a grid-locked world of DAW shaped musics and rat's-nest modular aleatory. Words fail where essential sonics are concerned, and this vital new creation speaks for itself.— (via Label)
