About
- A TAV Essential Listening Album -
Before he became one fo the pathbreaking pioneers of free jazz, Ornette Coleman struggled to gain notice due to his unusual use of pitch, thje drier tone of his trademark plastic saxaphone, and his experimental approach to improvisation. But in 1958, the long-ignored viosionary got his big break with his blues-inflected, bebop debut - Somethign Else!!!!, which featured Coleman's original compositions, introduced the world to him as a seminal improviser and composer.
Backed by cornetist Don Cherry, double bassist Charlie Haden, and drummers Ed Blackwell and Billy Higgins - this introductory LP features the most conventional compostions of Coleman's career. Nevertheless, one can hear Coleman already attempting to colour outside the lines with moments of dissonance, abstractive harmonies and unorthodox patterns. 'Something Else!!!!' is in itself a remarkable album, but it also offers a fascinating look at a genius on the brink of freedom. — The Analog Vault
