About
A TAV Essential Listening Album.
N.W.A (abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes) was an American hip hop group from Compton, California. Of the gangsta rap sub-genre, they were one of the earliest, most controversial and significant figures, who would go down to be considered as one of the greatest and most influential groups in hip hop history.
Active from 1986 to 1991, the main bulk of controversy surrounding the group would be their explicit lyrics, that many viewed as being disrespectful of women, a glorification of drugs and crime, and their overt hatred of the police system as epitomised in their landmark hit “F*ck Tha Police”. This subsequently led to the group being banned from many mainstream American radio stations. In spite of this, the group managed to garner a massive following, selling over 10 million copies in the United States alone.
The original lineup formed in 1986 comprised of Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren joined later, with Arabian Prince leaving shortly before the official release of Straight Outta Compton in 1988, and finally Ice Cube would join in 1989.
Ranked number 83 on the Rolling Stone’s list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time” and following three nominations, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Greatest Hits is a greatest hits compilation album originally released in 1996 by Priority Records. The re-released version contains two bonus tracks by the reunited group, The bonus tracks were "Chin Check”, recorded by Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and Snoop Dogg under the N.W.A name for the soundtrack of Next Friday and "Hello" which first appeared on Ice Cube's sixth studio album War & Peace Vol. 2 (The Peace Disc) and featured Dr. Dre and MC Ren.
