About
- The Analog Vault // Essential Listening -
Of all the artefacts unearthed from the ambient genre’s history, few are as priceless as this 1983 release from Midori Takada, which some cite as the holy grail of Japanese ambient and minimalist music. After making her debut at the Berlin Philharmonic for the RIAS Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s, the Japanese percussionist grew disillusioned with her classical repertoire.
Upon moving back home, she experimented with Indonesian gamelan, African polyrhythms and minimal music, leading to her first solo endeavour, Through The Looking Glass. This calming and meditative four-song suite - recorded onto analogue tape in just two days - is a pan-global sonic utopia. Sculpted around a diverse array of instruments, including marimbas, gongs, chimes, recorders, and a reed organ - Takada crafts a tranquil and immersive journey through panoramic soundscapes of subliminal beauty.
Palto Flats & WRWTFWW Records are proud to announce the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada‘s sought after and timeless ambient / minimal album “Through The Looking Glass”, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan.
Considered a Holy Grail of Japanese music by many, “Through The Looking Glass” is Midori Takada’s first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. — (via Label)
