About
A TAV Curator’s Pick.
July is Marissa Nadler's sixth full-length studio album, released in 2014 on Bella Union and in North America on Sacred Bones Records. The album was recorded at Seattle’s Avast Studios and produced by Randall Dunn.
Pop Matters called the album a "triumph" and "one of 2014's best albums so far," while Spin called it a "masterfully composed release". Noisey wrote that "the darkly lit July is a moody trip through heat spells and night drives... Nadler’s quiet songwriting and ethereal sound give July a sound that's, at times, almost sinister.” - Wiki
“July is more tactile thanks to new producer Randall Dunn, best known for his work with metal bands such as Earth, Sunn O))), and Wolves in the Throne Room. (Dunn has also worked on folkier projects for Akron/Family and Six Organs of Admittance, but Nadler has ties to the black metal community, having collaborated with Xasthur and Locrian.) The pairing befits Nadler's sound. Like black metal, her songs are atmospheric, austere, and engulfing. At times, Nadler's resonant acoustic strums are coated thick, as if emboldened by the deep ebony outline of a Sharpie marker. Her gothic touchstones return more deliberately melodic, and the audible strength of her voice lends to a more idiosyncratic sound; even the quiet acoustic songs and piano ballad sound like they are set up on-stage.” - Pitchfork
