This is one of the great jazz duo records that has largely flown under the radar. Joe Chambers, a defining drummer of the modernist era whose work with such as Wayne Shorter, Sam Rivers and Andrew Hill was outstanding is also much more than a drummer. A skilled multi-instrumentalist, he plays excellent piano and percussion and this inspired meeting with organist Larry Young has so many sleights of hand and left-of-centre manoeuvres that it is worth having the set on a loop.

The composing by both men is exquisite and the material twists its way through subtle African and Asian rhythms, soulful themes and funky vamps that seamlessly topple into looser freeform. Chambers’ keyboard work is finely nuanced and effectively complemented by Young’s uniquely simmering quality on the Hammond. Needless to say, there are breakbeats aplenty to be mined by any producer with a sharp ear and indeed DJ Premier homed in on the bewitching ‘Mind Rain’, which he sampled to create Nas’s ‘New York State Of Mind’, one of the most “illmatic” of hip-hop tracks ever made. — (via JazzWise)

This is an unusual date. Joe Chambers, best known as a drummer, is heard on piano on four of these six tracks (including a fine effort on an unaccompanied version of "After the Rain"). The other selections are duets with the great organist Larry Young who would pass away four and a half months later. The music is somewhat adventurous with Chambers as the lead voice on the numbers on which he plays piano; the final two performances are organ-drum duets that put more of an emphasis on Young's unique sound.
