About
- A TAV Essential Listening Album -
Gábor Szabó’s sorcerous alchemy of folk music from his native Hungary with jazz, pop and chamber music makes him one of the most captivating guitarists of the 20th century. After cutting his teeth in jazz drummer Chico Hamilton’s quintet, and dabbling with Indian, Latin and psychedelic rock fusion during his stint at the Impulse! record label - Szabó spread his wings to create his own label, Skye Records. It was here that the brilliant Hungarian crafted his masterworks, peaking in 1968 with the album Dreams.
Backed by an indomitable octet (on guitar, bass, skins, horns, strings and piano), the assortment of spectral classical and pop covers alongside virtuoso originals showcased Szabó at his finest. Dreams unfolds itself as an elemental and ethereal third-stream reverie of mellow psychedelic jazz fused abundantly with Eastern classical sounds.- The Analog Vault
A cerebral trip through a land where classical music, Eastern exploration, and psychedelic jazz converge on a magical vortex. Gabor Szabo was a one-of-a-kind Hungarian jazz guitarist with Latin, Indian, and psychedelic rock fusion influences. Releasing the album on Skye Records, a label Szabo co-founded, gave him creative freedom to fully explore these diverse influences and express himself to the fullest depths of his imagination.
Dreams is a mixture of originals by Szabo and Gary McFarland (album producer, pianist, arranger), covers of Spanish composer Manuel DeFalla, and to round out its ode to psychedelia: a Donovan cover. The album rises and falls carefully and consciously as a cohesive unit, with moments of mellow, graceful, dramatic, moody, and peaceful. – Lauren Fay Levy
