About
Super Discount is the 1996 debut album by French DJ and producer Étienne de Crécy, an influential figure in the French electronic music scene. De Crecy's influence helped to propagate certain genres, from the good old scratchy filter-house beloved of Daft Punk to the jazzier take on the house genre that St Germain and others gave it, all while establishing France's national identity on the global electronic music market. This is more than just 'fun' music - it's got that classic French Midas touch. Although the track listing lists several artists, the majority of the credited artists are aliases for de Crécy alone or in collaboration. In 1997, Q ranked the album in their list of "The 25 Best Dance Albums Ever". De Crécy picked the best of France's new breed, including Air and Alex Gopher, to collaborate on this album. Loosely themed around a supermarket, it was a clever and classy introduction to Gallic dance music and each title bears a typical supermarket sales lingo.
Writer/DJ Bill Brewster (Last Night a DJ Saved My Life) and director Dimitri Pailhe have made a short documentary about de Crécy's career and the recent history of dance music in France. In addition to interviews with de Crécy, it also features Alex Gopher, Philippe Zdar, and other collaborators. They discuss the genesis, recording, and design of the Super Discount releases and the origin of the term "French Touch", among other commentary on the electronic music scene in the 90s. — via Label
