The first thing that strikes you about Ellen Allien’s latest album — her first in six years — is the warmth it radiates. Opening track, ‘Cruising’, sounds like dub techno that’s been left out in the sun, with mirage-hazed chords. When the warped synth line comes in, it’s surrounded by textural susurrations, like fingers sifting through sand. ‘New Life’ teems with these organic details — from the screeching birds that background the wide, desert-at-night techno of ‘Be Your Own Leader’, to the rivulets that run through the banging, cavernous ‘Bella’. Throughout these ten tracks, the natural world and the mechanical pulse of techno, minimal and darkwave fuse together, as the veteran Berlin producer urges us towards communal bonds, regeneration and collective action.
