About

FELT’s sixth volume extracts another fascinating mineral from Guy Brewer’s Carrier alias, further descending the wormhole of darkside minimalism with his most obfuscated rhythmic explorations yet.

FATHOM witnesses Guy Brewer’s unrelenting distillation of precision electronics develop beyond prior incarnations into unclassifiable mutations. Carrier is his sonic vessel in this new era, liberating his prior restrictions to highlight the outer kinetic recesses of experimental sounds that finds a natural home on Perko’s ever-evolving FELT imprint.

The title track twitches along in hallucinatory abstraction, circling the depths with glitched-out programming and fogged-out atmospherics. "The Cusp" narrows its gaze, meditating on a tense drum rollage that teeters on mellowed menace. "Markers" then forms a mechanised rinse-out of rumbling subs and plummeting steppers momentum. "Trooper" unfurls in a finale of future-shocked half time rollage and arpeggiated textures that affirms Carrier’s unwavering vision in sound and style. — (via Label)

Carrier is not a new act that has suddenly appeared on the scene with its dark, fast-paced breakbeat sound, not by a long shot. Previously for a very long time known under the pseudonym Shifted, Guy Brewer has buried his old alias and turned away from the straight bass drum. A pity, some might think. But his fans don't need to be too disappointed, because firstly, the Avian founder has had plenty of time to explore his techno roots, and secondly, he continues in pretty much the same musical vein as before. In other words: the leap from life-denying techno rollers to life-denying polyrhythmic monsters with difficult-to-follow beats isn't all that great after all.

The opening title track immediately evokes Autechre associations, whose shimmering, insect-like nonconformity Brewer blends with metallic clanging. The remaining three tracks also sound frantic and, with their sinister atmosphere, are ideally suited as a soundtrack for a horror film. "The Cusp" sows disquiet with its staccato chords, while "Trooper" stalks through a buzzing environment that, despite its sterility, seems to be alive. The repertoire from which Carrier draws feels artificially limited. Where, for example, Answer Code Request grants his tracks catharsis or Pessimist brews overwhelming club tracks from similar ingredients, Brewer seeks his salvation in manic celebreality. — (via HHV Mag)
