An album must be something else to entice a post-1955 Miles Davis to become a sideman once again. Well, Cannonball Adderly, and his 1958 Blue Note release, was absolutely Somethin’ Else. Main evented by the exhilarating interplay between the alto saxophonist and trumpeter (the pair’s chemistry was well established thanks Adderley also being a member of Davis’ “First Great Sextet”) - alongside the immaculate talents of pianist Hank Jones, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Blakey - this record became a landmark for hard bop and cool jazz. The two hornmen were at the peak of their powers here, lighting the studio on fire with call-and-response phrases and gorgeous blues lines.
