About
— The Analog Vault // Essential Listening —
Sour Soul is the collaborative album from Toronto jazz/hip-hop band BADBADNOTGOOD and Staten Island rap champ Ghostface Killah. Inspired by 1960s and 70s music - taking inspiration from the recording techniques and production of that era, and eschewing sampling in favour of live instrumentation, BBNG with producer Frank Dukes have created a dramatic, cinematic musical staging for Ghostface’s vivid storytelling. Sour Soul also features guest spots from MF DOOM, Elzhi (Slum Village / J Dilla), Danny Brown and prodigal new rapper Tree. — (via Label)
Canadian instrumental jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD and Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah unite for a sublime LP released via Lex Records. Released in 2015, Sour Soul is smooth post-bop meets dexterous hip-hop, filtered through the recording and production techniques of retro soul. The Torontonian band - made up of bassist Chester Hansen, keyboardist Matthew Tavares, and drummer Alexander Sowinski - provide the film noir-esque, blaxploitation-tinged soundtrack for the venerable New York City wordsmith to playfully spit his grimy rhymes, leading to a jazz rap album unlike other. Featuring cameos from emcees such as MF DOOM, Elzhi, Danny Brown and Tree, Sour Soul offers instrumental luxuriousness and vivid verses at every turn. A thrilling fusion collaboration that worked wonders. — The Analog Vault
