About
— The Analog Vault // Essential Listening —
Art Blakey may have coined the term had bop with his 1956 album Hard Bop, but it was his 1958 masterpiece on Blue Note that would become heralded as one of the finest records the genre has ever produced. Recorded in the famed Van Gelder Studio with his illustrious band The Jazz Messengers, Moanin’ was initially supposed to be self-titled, until the popularity of its now-iconic, bluesy opening track (composed by pianist Bobby Timmons) led to a rechristening.
Beyond its most famous tune, this LP is also filled with other astonishing tracks such as the sumptuous "Along Came Betty" and the New Orleans marching band influence of “Blues March” (both penned by tenor saxophonist Benny Golson). Propelled by the galvanic pulse of Blakey’s drumming, Moanin’ is a crucial album populated by some of jazz’s most recognisable classics. — The Analog Vault
