About

2025 repress of early Aphex Twin tracks - a seminal electronic music album.

Undoubtedly one of the most important and influential electronic artists to have emerged in popular music, the sonic misfit from Cornwall, the Aphex Twin, released a breathtaking slew of early singles and albums from 1991 onwards (and continues to present day). The first clutch of groundbreaking works came on the legendary Belgium label R&S Records and were collected on a compilation album Classics, released in 1995, and followed the global success of the timeless album Selected Ambient Works 85-92.

Classics receives a long overdue vinyl re-press for 2025, with a fresh vinyl cut by acclaimed mastering engineer Beau Thomas, and a R&S Records sticker sheet inserted into the LP sleeves including cover artwork of the two singles ‘Digeridoo’ and ‘Xylem Tube’ EP which are both featured on this compilation album. - (via Label: R&S Records)

First issued in ’95, Classics would arguably become a precipitous gateway drug for ravers who liked it a bit freakier. It collects all the tunes from his R&S EPs ‘Didgeridoo’ and Xylem Tube’ plus a pair of hard-as-nails templates for early gabber and hardcore techno in his QQT & TTQ mixes of Marc Trauner’s Mescalinum United, and the album exclusive ‘Live in Cornwall, 1990’ mix of crusty hammer ‘Digeridoo’, to boot.

Let’s pretend we’re not preaching to the choir, and you'll will find some of early ‘90s techno rave’s tuffet and most enduring cuts on board. Between the industrious body music of ‘Flaphead’, the spiralling rush of ‘Polynomial C’, and ‘Analogue Bubblebath’, we can hear the early range of a sound that would tilt most furiously into hardcore stomp on two mixes of ‘We Have Arrived’ that can be considered canon to early gabber and the sort of hard techno in abundance nowadays. — (via Boomkat)
