Set to make it’s international premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is John Scheinfeld’s documentary on John Coltrane titled ‘Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary’. John Scweinfeld’s previous credits includes the critically acclaimed ‘The U.S. vs. John Lennon’ and ‘Who Is Harry Nilsson…?’. With full support from the Coltrane family and the record labels that collectively own Coltrane’s catalog, Scheinfeld will have all the tools he need to tell a rich, in depth narrative of Coltrane’s extraordinarily influential life.
Here’s an official summary to the documentary, “Set against the social, political and cultural landscape of his times, the film will reveal the passions and demons that shaped Coltrane's life, and explore why his music transcends the barriers of race, religion and age as it continues to inspire listeners around the world decades after his death. Utilizing never-before-seen Coltrane family home movies and audio recordings along with rare film and television appearances, Coltrane's incredible story will be told by the people who know him best: his family, the musicians that worked with him, and the cultural icons who continue to draw inspiration from his fearless artistry and boundless creative vision.”
The documentary will also be narrated by Denzel Washington, who will also be voicing Coltrane’s readings throughout segments of the film. Also a whole wealth of new interviews will feature the original jazz vanguards Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter to modern day artists like Common and Kamasi Washington.
As of this moment, no official trailer is available for the documentary yet.
