Released just one year after his groundbreaking first album, Burial stunned critics, fans, and
peers alike by dropping an even better follow-up in 2007. Entitled Untrue, the elusive South
London producer and Hyperdub signee crafted a seamless and evocative LP that served as
tribute to UK’s rave culture. While technically categorised as dubstep, Burial incorporated
strains of UK garage, ambient and happy hardcore into this gloomy, pitch-shifted auditory
sketch of his hometown. Punctuated by time-stretched vocal samples from R&B records and his
signature skittering drum patterns, Untrue is as emotional as it is cerebral due to Burial’s
hypnotic infusion of human voices of longing and skipping heartbeats interwoven into haunting
sonic details.
