It flour­ished in the late 1970s and ’80s, in the hotel bars, cab­aret lounges and cafes of Cairo, and would be primar­ily dis­trib­uted by cas­sette, a medium that had all but eclipsed vinyl in much of the Middle East in the 1970s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Egypt-born, Ams­ter­dam-based soci­olo­gist and DJ Moataz Rageb, aka Disco Arabesquo, has become the fore­most cur­ator of this music, and fol­lows his ninet­rack 2022 com­pil­a­tion Sharayet El Disco with the 11-track \u003cem\u003eAyam El Disco: Egyp­tian Disco, Boo­gie And Jeel Cas­settes 1978–92\u003c\/em\u003e. Both assemble high­lights from the thou­sands of cas­settes in his col­lec­tion, which have been digit­ised, remastered and metic­u­lously cred­ited.
