About
A TAV Curator's Pick.
The legendary 1975 Black Ark album faithfully restored to its original glory now with an additional LP of rare, previously unreleased tracks.
Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, aka the Upsetter, is responsible for some of the most startling and adventurous contributions to the direction and development of reggae music as a producer, arranger and writer. His role in shaping the history of Jamaican music in particular and recorded music in general is immensely vast. For decades Lee Perry was the driving force behind the most important movements in reggae and since 1980 reissues of his previously released and unreleased material have assured his status in modern day music.
During the early 1970’s as reggae was on the rise, almost simultaneously gaining a foothold in culture were Hong Kong/Hollywood martial arts films that became the latest craze worldwide including in Jamaica. On ‘Kung Fu Meet the Dragon’ Perry particularly took the theme to heart referencing many of the popular films on the songs as others had done such as Keith Hudson on his seminal 1974 release ‘Enter The Dragon’.
‘Kung Fu Meets The Dragon’ is a special record for many reasons. Besides being one of Perry’s coveted ‘Black Ark’ albums released at arguably his creative peak, the album also featuresJamaican poly-instrumentalist Augustus Pablo on melodica – a Jamaican music legend in his own right adding his signature flavour to the record. As well as this Perry used some of the most unique and original producing techniques alongside his renowned backing group, The Upsetters, to make ‘Kung Fu…’ a true masterpiece of Jamaican Dub music.
Now available through Secret Records reggae subsidiary label, Sunspot Records, as a deluxe double LP album with additional tracks that again incorporate the martial arts theme for the complete Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry ‘Kung Fu Meets The Dragon’ experience! - Secret Records
