About
These three sessions, cut within a period of ten months in 1949-50, established Stan Getz as a style-setter on the tenor saxophone and, principally on the strength of his ballad interpretations, as a popular jazz artist.
His time with the Woody Herman band in the late Forties had thrust Getz into the jazz public's ear, particularly his solo on "Early Autumn," "Long Island Sound," based on "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," and "Mar-cia," his treatment of "When Your Lover Has Gone," reinforced his rise to prominence.
This is Getz at the height of his "cool" period, predating the West Coast movement by a couple of years. The superb solos and sensitive accompaniment by pianist Al Haig are added attractions. – Press Release
Musicians:
Stan Getz, tenor sax
Al Haig, piano
Tony Aless, piano
Gene Ramey, bass
Tommy Potter, bass
Percy Heath, bass
Stan Levey, drums
Roy Haynes, drums
Don Lamond, drums
"At the time, Getz's cool, Lester Young-inspired sound was becoming more distinct and harmonically varied, featuring the beautifully mellifluous tone he would soon turn into his trademark. Getz's airy approach is optimally heard on Quartets' many ballad standards.” – Allmusic
