A TAV Essential Listening Album.

‘Sirens’ is the highly anticipated second full-length LP from Nicolas Jaar, the Chilean-born electronic music producer, mixing engineer and DJ. A prolific artist with a wide palette of talents, Jaar spent his teenage years in dance music circles in New York City, where he now resides. In 2011, he released his debut album, the critically-acclaimed ‘Space is Only Noise’. In 2012, he was contributed to BBC Radio 1’s prestigious ‘Essential Mix’ series, winning ‘Essential Mix of the Year’.

Jaar is the founder of the New York based imprint Other People, releasing music and spoken word by a diverse group of artists ranging from Lydia Lunch to Ezekiel Honig. – Press Release

“Sirens represents a full reemergence, as close as he may ever get to kicking over the mic stand. He doesn't reveal many new tricks, but his knowledge of his own palette is masterful in every moment. More poetic and thoughtful than ever before, Jaar maintains an ability to fit seemingly disparate sounds together as if they were always meant to find each other. Add the strands of political expression that are gathered on Sirens, often cloaked in odd textures, in Spanish, or in cryptic lyrics, and you have a record as compelling as any of Jaar’s other works.” – Pitchfork

“The first real musical “stuff” of the album, after about three-and-a-half minutes of breaking glass punctuated with improvisatory piano noodling, is typical Jaar fare; reverb-heavy vocals and percussion are gradually introduced into a minimal, repetitive piano theme. Fast-forwarding to ‘No’, arguably the most distinct “song” on the album, Jaar enters a totally different world. The vocals have switched languages from English to Spanish, while the piano is replaced with syncopated, Cumbia-invoking dance beat. Meanwhile, ‘Three Sides of Nazareth’ could pass as gritty, cynical new wave while the closing track, ‘History Lesson’, is almost comical in its doo-wop tendencies.

While some of this synthesis does happen musically—heavy reverb persists throughout, as well as vocals that always seem stuck between background and foreground—the glue that holds this album together is its politics. And these politics are synthetic in every sense: trans-cultural, trans-historical, and truly global.” – The Quietus
