About
Maki Asakawa (1942-2010) was a Japanese jazz and blues singer, lyricist and composer. She was one of Japan’s finest singers, with a unique style influenced by black American music that ranged from pained blues ballads to R&B. Born in northern Japan, she quit her office job to move to Tokyo, started singing in clubs and US military bases, and discovered Billie Holiday. From traditional waltzes to sitar-lead psych-out and modal spiritual jazz, her Nico-style mystery and allure made her a countercultural icon in Japan.
Here we have "Spilling Golden Sand - What it be like", her 20th Album that was self-produced by Maki herself. The album explores a more left-field pop leaning sound mixed with Jazz but still rooted in true Maki Style, moody, poetic and hypnotic. Check it out below!
