Though his tone had softened, Young’s phrasing remains fluid and expressive, favoring subtlety over force. Produced by Norman Granz, the date brings together Roy Eldridge and Harry “Sweets” Edison on trumpet, whose contrasting styles—fiery drive and relaxed, bluesy restraint—create a compelling musical contrast. Backed by Hank Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), George Duvivier (bass), and Mickey Sheen (drums), the session blends small-group swing with a polished studio feel. Highlights include “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and “Salute to Benny”—a tribute to Benny Goodman, who gave Young his first clarinet—with both tracks featuring rare late-career clarinet solos by Young. The album documents one of Young’s final studio sessions, a closing chapter for “The Pres.”

Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging. — (via Label)

—

One of tenor-saxophonist Lester Young's final studio sessions (he died a year later), this date apparently had a lot of difficulties but the recorded results are excellent. Prez was joined by two great swing trumpeters (Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison) and a fine rhythm section for two standards, two originals and the ballad "Gypsy in My Soul." Young takes rare clarinet solos on two of the selections with his emotional statement on "They Can't Take That Away from Me" being one of the highpoints of his career. — (via AllMusic)

↓
Label: Verve Records
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Gatefold
Reissued: 2026 / Originally Released: 1958
Genre: Jazz
Style: Bop, Swing

File under: Audiophile Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/Laughin-to-keep-from-Cryin-Lester-Young.jpg?v=1791024609
https://theanalogvault.com/products/lester-young-roy-eldridge-herry-edison-laughin-to-keep-from-cryin-2026-acoustic-sounds-series
