A TAV Curator's Pick.

Nothing New is a posthumous album of vocal & piano recordings by Gil Scott-Heron, originally released by XL Recordings in conjunction with Record Store Day 2014. However this release is the 2015 rer-elease, containing a DVD with the documentary, “Who is Gil Scott-Heron?”.

The album consists of new, stripped-down versions of select older Scott-Heron songs stretching from 1971's "Pieces of a Man" to 1994's "The Other Side". It was recorded with producer Richard Russell between 2005 and 2009, in the same sessions that led to 2011's I'm New Here.

“Among the tracks Scott-Heron reworked, “Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams)” is a collaboration with Brian Jackson dating back to 1980. While I’m New Here reflects feelings of uncertainty and disconnect, the refurbished “Alien” feels bright and warm, as Scott-Heron nearly perfectly recreates the original’s inherent playfulness and funky groove (even sans that killer bassline). Still, the stripped down version is a better fit for the song’s lyrical content, as the elder Scott-Heron imbues the inspirational motif with a sense of worldly experience and sagely wisdom.” - Consequence of Sound
