gene-ammons-blue-gene-analogue-productions-45rpm-reissue
Gene Ammons – Blue Gene (Analogue Productions 45RPM Reissue)

Jazz lovers and sonic thrill seekers — here's a horn-heavy hangout starring the smooth, swaggering Gene Ammons and a dream team of mid-century jazz legends. Think of it as a top-shelf jam session that someone wisely remembered to hit "record" on.

This 1958 gem is bluesy by name and bluesier by nature — three of the four tracks ride those familiar blues changes like a Cadillac with velvet seats. But don't get too comfortable, because pianist Mal Waldron penned the entire setlist, including the haunting, minor-key ballad "Hip Tip," just to keep your ears on their toes.

Gene Ammons, aka "Jug," brings that famously expressive tenor sax of his — rich enough to butter toast with — and pairs up with two of the finest co-conspirators ever to bless a horn: the sharp, soulful Idrees Sulieman on trumpet and the baritone brawler himself, Pepper Adams. This trio doesn't just blow; they converse, they duel, and occasionally they just throw down.

Every player on this date had already jammed with Gene before, so the chemistry is tighter than a snare drum. It's the kind of session where everyone shows up knowing it's about to go down — and it does.

The vinyl reissue is par excellence: Mastering by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at Acoustech Mastering, double LP cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings! Plus it's housed in a Stoughton Printing Old Style Tip-On gatefold jacket with scuff-resistant matte finish.

Blue Gene is a must-have slice of golden-era jazz — equal parts brains, brawn, and bluesy brilliance. File it under "Instant Vibe." — (via Label)

—

For a blowing session such as this, the instrumentation is ideal. The horns complement each other from the standpoint of tonal balance, the rhythm section is strong and reliable and the charts (such as they are) are simple, uncomplex vehicles on which the guys happily ride to market.

Blue Gene is a slow blues with a typically intriguing Waldron lecture on the virtues of funk and a thoughtful Watkins bass solo. The aptly titled Scamperin’ is an up-tempo hustler on which Ammons spends a lot of time generating a kind of Hamptonian pseudo-excitement. Adams fails to rise above ordinary level and Sulieman only just makes his destination after detouring through a couple of startling references to the song, Dixie.

Blue Greens, in a medium groove, has exchanges of fours between the horns in which Adams gets his point across most effectively. Hip Tip, Waldron’s minor ballad, is marred a little by Gene’s rather braying tone and somewhat stodgy conception. Piano comping and solo, though, are excellent. — (via Down Beat)

—

— 2LP, 45RPM pressed on 180g black vinyl
— Part of the Analogue Productions Fantasy 45 Series
— Housed in Stoughton Printing Old Style Tip-On gatefold jacket with scuff-resistant matte finish

↓
Label: Analogue Productions / Prestige
Format: Vinyl, LP, 45 RPM, Reissue, Stereo, 180 Gram
Reissued: 2026 / Originally Released: 1958
Genre: Jazz
Style: Hard Bop, Soul-Jazz

File under: Audiophile Jazz
⦿

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0584/5434/3838/files/AAPJ_205-45__194135__04222025100816-7862.jpg?v=1789800239
