About

A Soul Experiment is the fourteenth album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded between 1968/1969 and released in 1969. It was his third release on the Atlantic label and features performances by Hubbard, Carlos Garnett on tenor sax, Kenny Barron on piano, Gary Illingworth plays the organ, Billy Butler & Eric Gale on guitar, Jerry Jemmott on bass, and Grady Tate & Bernard Purdie on drums.

A Soul Experiment finds Hubbard aiming for 1969 commercial radio acceptance with shorter songs, and a stab at Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman." During the recording of this album, many controversial opinions were expressed. With each side recorded, the tensions increased, the more excited Freddie became with his "Soul Experiment."

By the time the recording sessions were over, everyone was captivated by his infectious soul styling. The album spotlights another hidden side of this jazz superstar; a soulful side with which many people listening will be delightfully surprised. – Elusive Disc
