Beverly Glenn-Copeland – Transmissions: The Music Of Beverly Glenn-Copeland
$45.00
Following a crowd-sourced documentary in 2019 which took his story wider still, Transmissions is the first formal attempt to gather works from across Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s career in one place. The physical copy spans just nine tracks and 47 minutes (although the digital edition extends past the hour mark), which appears slight for an artist who could easily command double the runtime. Given the wide variety of styles and moods across the compilation, as well as the potential for emotional overload, a gentle introduction might be an act of mercy. At numerous points, it can seem as if you’ve flipped over to a different record entirely.
While the sequencing on Transmissions does fortify a greater understanding about Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s gift, the comp essentially ties a bow atop an established feel-good story. The same themes recur with every review, interview, and radio special: joy, acceptance, redemption, magic. What does it say about us that we’re all lusting after hope? It’s inevitable, perhaps: the coalescence around his music is a welcome unifier in an ugly age. From his belated emergence on the world stage in the wake of Keyboard Fantasies, through feature-length films and right up until this compilation’s release, people have jostled non-stop to place their hand upon this beacon of light. Glenn-Copeland has obliged each one. – Pitchfork

Three years after her critically acclaimed debut, "Diving" (2014), Ellen Andrea Wang returns with "Blank Out" on Jazzland Recordings.
Her accompanists on this sonic adventure are Erland Dahlen (drums) and Andreas Ulvo (Keyboards), while Wang provides vocals, bass and some keys. The music that pours out of this trio is eclectic, fearlessly dipping into different pools of genre to create a potent sound cocktail that moves between minimalist-inflected jazz funk pop (acid jazz meets Haim), Nordic atmospherics (insert Nordic ECM album of choice), 70s singer-songwriter (think Joni Mitchell or Rickie Lee Jones), and hip-hop (moving in an Outkast direction). Wang's vocals are pure, clean, and expressive, and are in total contrast to some of the down-and-dirty basslines she conjures, while Dahlen and Ulvo weave a sonic tapestry that never puts a note, beat or texture wrong. A key example is the lead single "Change of Heart" a song that is bubbling over with Erlend Dahlen's driving drums and Wang's own grooving bass topped with Andreas Ulvo's chattering electric piano lines, and crystalline synths and pads. It bristles with an energetic optimism, perfect for long summer evenings and soundtracking memories. – Jazzland Records
“Wang mixes terseness and a spooky ethereality on the immigration-interview satire Peace Prize, hops registers above the heavy groove of Bad Blood, wittily tone-bends her way through Electric (“I’ve got an electric conscience / I’ve got an electric mind / I’ve got an electric boyfriend”). But her majestic Charlie Haden-like bass intro to chorister-vocal atmospherics on Accord De Paris is a reminder of the talented Wang’s jazz-bass power. She is a real find.” – The Guardian
