IN HIS OWN WORDS:
I had recently been experimenting at home with a microphone and a laptop, recording and uploading new songs for free online, each one alongside a photo and some words, and open to comments from the outside world. At some point Robert (Erased Tapes label founder) started listening to the music and felt compelled to encourage me to compile an album with all this material. His reaction to ‘These Walls of Mine’ (the song, not the album) was exactly how I felt about the music. I wasn’t sure if I loved it or hated it. But I loved the feeling of that uncertainty, of surprising myself and others around me. And in the end Robert got behind all the songs, which gave me the courage to finish the music for this release.
These songs are best viewed as a collection of lyrical and vocal experiments. Of course the instruments and the music are important, but this album is held together by a dialogue of voices. Conversations with myself and with others. Several tracks contain lyrical contributions from friends and strangers, made possible with the help of the internet.
And then I sang and sang and sang. I love singing. And I love cats.

“Singapore-based singer-songwriter Dru Chen unveiled his debut LP, Mirror Work, today. The soul-inspired, 11-track album reflects on Chen's recent experiences on love and loss, struggles with self-acceptance, creative control and outwardly expressing his newfound optimistic outlook. It lists two previously released singles, 'When I Look Into Your Eyes' and 'Distant Memory', and a collaboration with established jazz musician, Chok Kerong, who was the musical director for Charlie Lim's show last year. According to an official press release, Chen explains the sonic direction he chose for the album, "I think there’s a lot of tradition in this record. It’s just a fascination of mine. I’ve always wanted to do something that sounded analog – totally organic and ’70s informed, before the digital age. I’d done a lot of up-beat songs, so I also wanted to do something more mellow. I think I was operating slowly at that time so Side Two of the record is like a bedroom album, something to put on the turntable and just leave it.” – Bandwagon Singapore

A 2009 release, Declaration of Dependence is the third album from the Norwegian pop/folk duo Kings of Convenience. Consisting of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe, the musical group is known for their delicate tunes, calming voices, and intricate and subtle guitar melodies. Øye and Bøe both compose and sing the songs.
Declaration of Dependence is the story of two people living two very different lives sensing that they are immensely more powerful together than apart. In that sense it is the most adult, the most mature record Kings of Convenience have ever made. That it is their most gripping, their most revealing is, if anything, just a by-product of that honesty and their endeavor.
"Erlend is a very stubborn individual with extreme belief in his own ideas," says Erik of his partner. "He's very free and creative and his access to unusual and fresh ideas is very good. I find that quite unique. For some reason they are very similar to my ideas on music - we like the same unusualness."
“Ignoring calls to fold Erlend Øye's hushed beats into their hushed folk, the Kings of quiet return with their most whisper-soft-- and graceful-- record yet.” – Pitchfork
