Records, is one of preeminent jazz drummer Max Roach’s most politically charged and musically expansive recordings. Recorded over two days in September 1960 at Universal Studios in Chicago, the record reflects Roach’s deepening engagement with themes of social justice and Pan-African identity. The ensemble features trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, and tuba innovator Ray Draper, alongside Roach’s own commanding blend of cymbal textures, mallets, and explosive rhythmic detail. The inclusion of vocalist Abbey Lincoln — Roach’s artistic and political partner at the time — adds urgency and emotional power to the project’s most pointed statements. While not formally structured as a suite, the album’s six tracks move fluidly between spiritual lament, militant swing, and improvisational abstraction.

The opening piece, “Garvey’s Ghost,” sets the tone with Afro-Caribbean rhythmic undercurrents, while “Mendacity” takes aim at hypocrisy with biting horn lines and Lincoln’s dramatic delivery. Elsewhere, “Mama” and “Praise for a Martyr” explore personal and collective grief through dynamic interplay and modal intensity. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. — (via Label)

↓
Label: Impulse!
Series: Verve Vault
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Reissue, Stereo, 180g, Gatefold
Reissued: 2025 / Originally Released: 1961
Genre: Jazz
Style: Post Bop, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Hard Bop

File under: Audiophile Jazz
⦿

["Audiophile Jazz","Genre - Afro-Cuban Jazz","Genre - Hard Bop","Genre - Jazz","Genre - Jazz - Afro-Cuban Jazz","Genre - Jazz - Hard Bop","Genre - Jazz - Post Bop","Genre - Post Bop","Label - Impulse!","Label - Impulse! Records, was saxophonist Archie Shepp’s first major studio statement and remains one of his most influential albums. Co-produced by John Coltrane and recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio, the set presents Shepp performing four Coltrane compositions — “Naima,” “Mr. Syms,” “Syeeda’s Song Flute,” and “Cousin Mary” — alongside Shepp’s own “Rufus.” Rather than offering faithful renditions, Shepp and arranger Roswell Rudd reimagine Coltrane’s material with bold ensemble voicings, fluctuating time signatures, and unfettered improvisation.

The result is an album that honors Coltrane’s vision while reframing it through the lens of the emerging avant-garde. The quintet — Shepp on tenor saxophone, Rudd on trombone, Alan Shorter on flugelhorn, Reggie Workman on bass, and Charles Moffett on drums — bridges the intensity of free jazz with the formal rigor of post-bop. Not only is his brilliant command of the six-string present here, so is the vivid color tones of notes and blue notes played between. Backed up by a hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing orchestra conducted and arranged by Don Sebesky, the music almost lifts the listener off his feet into a dreamy, water-like landscape. The atmosphere is serene and enchanting, such as a romantic evening for two under starlight, and certainly a romantic eve merits the accompaniment of this record. The sounds are soft, smooth, and silky, and Montgomery addresses full leadership of his graceful melodic style, fronting close to 20 members of a orchestra perhaps best described resonant and sweeping. So too are the sweeping note flows of Montgomery's guitar, and his surprising fluidness towards the art of comping, a necessary trait of the jazz guitar virtuoso.

Even the unforgettable Jim Hall can be tickled and intrigued through a listen of these influential records, as for all amateur and professional guitar musicians. "A Quiet Thing" is perhaps the most somber, peaceful, and smooth piece on the record, demonstrating Montgomery's love of quiet, and how much the idea of not playing at all brings music to the listeners. The charming sounds of orchestral violas, violins, cellos, and harp are sent ablaze to create a pleasant atmosphere, either for a quick morning get up, get ready for work, or evening dining setting. "Here's That Rainy Day" is an up-tempo bossa nova tune that resonates with Montgomery's enticing chordal changes and blissful phrasing, not to mention the blend of harp and strings lays the groundwork for a perfect rainy day inside, with drops pattering at the windows and fires aglow. The recording engineer did a wonderful job with this album. Within two days, together with his old companions, an album with five tracks was created, which are completely in the spirit of jazz fusion and funk, but infused with a characteristic relaxedness. In "Kuro to Shiro", the trombone grooves its way over the rhythm while the piano tries to hold the whole joint together. It's perhaps Tyner's recollection of the quartet as "four pistons in an engine" that most aptly explains the singular drive heard during Coltrane's extended runs on "Liberia." Tyner flawlessly complements Coltrane with full resonating chords that cling to his volley of sound. The rhythmic gymnastics of percussionist Jones is also showcased as his double-jointed bop swing and military band precision are distinctly displayed on the blues "Equinox." The opening six bars give Jones a chance to make a contrasting statement — which he takes full advantage of. Over fifteen undulating sonic fugue states, he guides listeners round a liminal world, made up of familiar materials but formed in a way defying all laws of perspective and physics. Like the impossible perspective of Giorgio de Chirico’s paintings, background murmurings give way to almost uncomfortably foregrounded chattering, and one perceived soundstage segues into another impossible tableau of sonic apparitions, some recognisable in form, but all boldly decontextualised and arranged in expertly cluttered amalgams. The twisting, ‘penguin pool at London Zoo’ form on the cover also alludes to this Escher-esque collision of sonic angles, its arcing petal-like plateau spiralling into oblivion and calling to mind Le Corbusier’s 1958 Philips Pavilion, housing Iannis Xenakis and Varèse’s similarly disembodied sequence of sonic artefacts, Poème Électronique. Although possibly Yokota’s first entirely beatless work, it does not share the capital A ambient nature of Eno’s forays into discreet music, or the soothing soundscapes more readily associable with The Boy and The Tree, his previous effort on the Skintone label.

Instead, it rewards deep and intentioned listening; watching sounds and textures pass by in a seductive dream sequence. Not one to stick on while entertaining friends or spring cleaning.

‘Rising Sun’ gently sets the tone for a vivid trip, with its deep, resonant monastic drones, band-passed signal interference and eerie operatic wails, before the antigravitational tone float of ‘Lost Ring’ leads the listener into the cosmic ping pong match of the onomatopoeic ‘gong gong gong’, a spiritual prequel to composers like Alexi Baris and Ulla Straus’ expansive audio patchworks. The mellower ‘Iconic Air’ fuses a plodding, space-lounge bassline with metallic dub techno sound FX and overtone atmospheres, and the nearly avant-pop abstraction on ‘Light of The Sun’ leads us into the plinky, isolationist centrepiece ‘Grey Piano’, channelling Arvo Pärt’s austere tintinnabulations. ‘7 Degrees Dream’ guides us back towards deep-space cocktail party ambience before the sinister, cinematic warning tones of ‘Hidden Love’ preempt the bitonal chaos of ‘Trip Eden’. The borderline cheesy, questing synths of ‘True Story’ are soon undermined by mischievous, formant-shifted vocalisations, and colossal synth stalactites glisten on the aptly named ‘Dragon Place’.

The almost disconcertingly gentle ‘I am flying’ eases us into soporific bliss, before ‘Dizzy Echo’, ‘Heart By Heart’, and the percussive stride of ‘Hyper on Hyper’ end the album on a flustered, breathless note, dropping us back to reality with a thud and a cosmic pat on the back.

Another factor setting Laputa apart from the eternal chin-stroke of both ambient and avant garde camps is its use of unflinchingly synthetic sounds and textures, as well as pop detritus. Take ‘Lost Ring’ for instance, where soaring, Jimmy Smith-style rotary hammond licks circle overhead, crying out in a vacuum otherwise permeated by mostly uncanny, humanoid chattering, or ‘23 Degrees Dream’, where 80s city-pop synth lines, clumsy blues guitar twangs, and shoegazy vocal mantras bob in the void. This aspect of Yokota’s music speaks to his profound mastery and appreciation of the twin disciplines of popular and ‘art’ music, a dichotomy which a handful of critics dourly and categorically failed to understand on the release of his first non-dance efforts. Sucks to be them. The frenetic “Big Ass in Motion” is built around samples from Rudy Ray Moore and The Madam’s infamous “Sensuous Black Woman,” an X-rated comedy record that would later feature in classic booty house records. Mid-tempo cosmic groovers are well-represented with jams like “Hellfire” and “Megablue,” which perfectly capture Cowley’s bathhouse-in-outerspace sensibilities. No collection of Cowley’s work would be complete without an interstellar floor-filler, and we’ve got quite a few here, like “Jungle Jump,” which pits whirling beats with dub-laced swirls of synth, or “Spellbinding Lover,” a Donna Summer-indebted melancholic boogie masterpiece that features Sylvester backup singer Jeanie Tracy. Hard Ware closes with the chilling synth-hymn ”Ice Age,” in which Loverde vocalist Peggy Gibbons sings of a coming frosty apocalypse. Glistening synthesizers and squelchy basslines do battle over drum machines, while vocalists pop up here and there to moan and lament, croon and demand. Tunes such as “Hellfire” and “Perk It Up,” with their rugged simplicity and layout, may seem commonplace, even humdrum—but they’re not. This circuit board is patented.

What’s more, the simplicity often belies the tasteful assembly of these tracks. Cowley’s music sometimes recalls a giant building that only reveals its detailing and complexity once you get within a few feet of it. Enjoy the close-up, or just enjoy the expanse. Headphones or subwoofers. Morning commute or dancefloor. Note how the simple chord change and melody in “Hellfire” is triumphant, yet tinged with a kind of weary resignation, or the genre-less magic of “Pajama Party Massacre,” which is en route to The B-52s by way of The Gun Club, pulsing with electricity. (Campy song titles like that one and “Big Ass In Motion” are worth the price of admission alone.) Cowley is a master of marshalling simple, well-chosen elements into music that subtly shifts and modulates; it’s not dissimilar to the way groups such as Can constructed their hypnotic grooves. — (via Bandcamp)

—

— 2LP, pressed on black vinyl
— Housed in gatefold sleeve
— Includes liner notes by Andrew Ryce and Peggy Gibbons

↓
Label: Dark Entries
Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 2025
Genre: Electronic
Style: Disco, Experimental, Funk, Hi NRG

File under: Disco / Boogie / Funk
⦿

["Genre - Boogie","Genre - Disco","Genre - Electronic","Genre - Experimental","Genre - Funk","Label - Dark Entries","LP","New Arrivals","Vinyl
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title

Nearly 10 years on since his last solo LP, Berlin techno icon Marcel Dettmann arrives on Dekmantel with an expansive album captured in a flash of inspiration.

In many ways Fear Of Programming is a reflection on the artistic process – the critical hurdles one has to overcome, the constant strive for originality, the ability to capture inspiration in its pure moment of inception. Bar the closing title track (and we all know Marcel loves a surprise closing), these 13 tracks came together during a period in which our hirsute host was able to immerse himself in studio practice and set the intention to record an album’s worth of material every single day. From the resulting mass of work there were many options to choose from, and Fear Of Programming stood out as one of the most complete statements on Dettmann’s approach in the here and now.

Unconcerned with an overarching concept, it was the work in the studio which drove the musical direction. No labouring over knotty arrangements, no painstaking mix downs – just honest expression, a moment caught, a groove locked, a stroke of synth sent pirouetting over a cavernous bed of texture. The results are varied, and while you might well hear plenty of bruising machinations in line with the techno Dettmann has made his name on, there are plenty of other shades expressed across the album.

Ambient sojourns, beatless epics and angular electronica have equal footing with strident, floor-friendly workouts. Standout piece ‘Water’ offers an icy ballet of swinging minimal and drip-drop melodics fronted by Ryan Elliott on lesser-spotted vocal duties, urging, ‘give me a sign, just a little something to let me know that you’re mine’. It’s playful, but still underpinned with the sincerity that comes with Dettmann’s work.

Running on instinct, Dettmann presents an honest version of himself in the here and now, speaking through the sonics and not over-thinking the results. His decades of experience helming a thousand techno parties speak for themselves, while his evolution as a musical entity through collaboration and his own BAD MANNERS label demonstrate his appetite for change. Indeed, the working method which resulted in the album also spurred him on to create a live set beyond his well-established DJ practice. Without resorting to a conceited overhaul, Fear Of Programming opens up the idea of what Dettmann represents in the modern techno landscape. — (via Label)

—

For a long time, it seemed like Marcel Dettmann was destined to be the austere yin to Ben Klock's playful yang. Klock, the smiley, affable one with a collection of house records. Dettmann, the East Berlin EBM enthusiast. Dueling profiles from the mid-2010s capture this dynamic perfectly: Klock drinks champagne on private jets; Dettmann eats DDR chocolate and drives his interviewer around Berlin. But if you've been following Dettmann's trajectory since, he's been pursuing a makeover, from his Dekmantel Selectors compilation showcasing the lighter side of industrial, to his Tangerine Dream-indebted contribution to the Matrix Resurrections soundtrack. The days of his Viking-esque, imposing figure have been chiseled away, revealing what Andrew Ryce called, a "goofy, almost cuddly image." Fear Of Programming, his first proper LP since 2013 isn't cuddly, per se, but it's filled with soft touches of brightness, stretching his industrial-influenced sound is across house, ambient and techno frameworks.

If you want to hear what this sounds like in action, "Suffice To Predict'' is a good place to start. It features the album's first kick drum—a big, brash one, at that—but it's softened with a muted arpeggio that adds a hint of psychedelia and a nearly giddy slapped bassline. He gets even softer on standout track, "Water" with fellow Berghain resident Ryan Elliott on vocals. Following a 12-inch on Elliot's Faith Beat label earlier this year, he leans into his housier tendencies as delicate synths and a slow, rolling rhythm contrast perfectly with the over-the-top lyrics that sound like a middle schooler's Valentine's Day card ("Give me a sign / maybe that you're mine"; "Me and you / That would be so divine"; "My love burns hot like a fire / not even water can fade this desire"). Elsewhere he leaves techno behind entirely. This isn't totally new territory (check out 2017's dark ambient Rauch), but he goes full homage to '90s ambient on "Reverse Dreams," with its dusty arpeggios and broken chords. It's not all daybreak beauty—he loads the low-end with some threatening hints of sub bass, deep in the mix. — (via Resident Advisor)

— 2LP, pressed on black vinyl

↓
Label: Dekmantel
Format: 2 x Vinyl, 12", 33 ⅓ RPM, Album
Released: 2022
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno

File under: House / Electro / Techno
⦿

["Genre - Deep Techno","Genre - Electronic","Genre - Techno","LP","New Arrivals","Vinyl
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title

It’s A Feedelity Affair is reissued in 2026 as a 20th Anniversary Edition, marking the first-ever vinyl release of the album. The album's lofty peaks are the now instantly recognisable chill sci-fi sheen of "I Feel Space" and the stately, widescreen bleeps of new track "The Contemporary Fix", whose stereopanning percussion, shards of glistening dulcimer, and endlessly percolating 303 bass aspire to a majestic strain of minimalism that could go anywhere. It's difficult to know whether Lindstrøm would be better served pursuing this line of flight from plush disco, or to follow the path he's taken with Thomas, concocting ever-more sumptuous flights of multi-instrumentalist fancy, such as on their gorgeous, Henrik Schwarz-style remix of Tosca's "Zuri". From lush strands of instrumental vibrancy to more robotic simplicity in other tracks, Lindstrøm isn’t one to remain stagnant. “Cane It For the Original Whities” and “There’s a Drink in My Bedroom and I Need a Hot Lady,” aside from having the most entertaining titles, pile on the funk basslines and strut-worthy beats, merely begging for a leather jacket and tight pants in which to do so. These tracks just may be the ideal atmosphere for the drink and hot lady in your bedroom, gents. Yet “I Feel Space” is more straightforward in its uptempo synth-happiness. More handclaps abound, throbbing bass and a slick airy sheen in tow. What began as a standalone single quickly expanded into a full-blown pan-cultural pop opera that ignored genres and common sense with joyful abandon.

Musically, the album sits at a delirious crossroads. Psychedelic pop collides with funk rhythms, samba and bubblegum melodies, full of chants and choruses in a phonetic pseudo-Japanese, written with the help of a dictionary. Kluger and Vangarde famously recruited a children’s choir to perform the vocals, and for added spectacle, they brought in a Japanese judo grandmaster, whose ritualistic shouts and battle cries erupt throughout the record.

Several singles were released. One of them, Yamasuki, with accompanying dance move, appeared in the United Kingdom and France on John Peel’s Dandelion label, a fitting home for a record that thrived on the margins of pop culture. Its B-side, Aieaoa, proved even more potent. In 1975, the song was reborn as A.I.E. (A Mwana) by Black Blood, an African group recording in Belgium, this time sung in Swahili. That melody would travel even further. Aie a Mwana became the debut single of English pop group Bananarama, and in 2010 it resurfaced once more as Helele, an official song of the FIFA World Cup, recorded by South African singer Velile Mchunu with Danish percussion duo Safri Duo. That version became the most widely known incarnation of the song. With Jean Kluger directly involved, it was less a cover than a continuation of the original idea.

The album’s afterlife did not stop there. Over the years, Yamasuki has been quietly sampled, covered, and featured across media far beyond the realm of novelty pop. Kono Samourai was sampled in The Healer by Erykah Badu (2007), produced by Madlib, while Yama Yama has found its way into recent pop culture as well: appearing in the television series Fargo, on Angus Stone’s project Dope Lemon, and on the 2008 Late Night Tales compilation curated by Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders. Proof, if any were needed, that this strange little record carries a deeper musical DNA than its playful exterior might suggest.

This new reissue of Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki proves the renewed interest and respect for this cult album, faithful to the original spirit while finally giving it back the physical presence it deserves. In an era obsessed with genres and algorithmic neatness, Yamasuki still laughs, dances and karate-kicks its way past definitions. It reminds us that pop music can be playful without being disposable, strange without being cynical and joyful without explanation. The world of Yamasuki was always fabulous, we are just lucky it found its way back to us! — (via Label)

—

In Thomas Bangalter’s case, he didn’t lick it off the stone. In the early 1970s, his father, under the name Daniel Vangarde, devised a concept for a musical project which was strangely predictive of his son’s subsequent blueprint for fame. Vangarde had been pursuing a peripatetic route through popular music in late 1960s France. He skipped between projects and genres as writer, arranger and producer. He was fond of releasing all kinds of music and took the highly unusual step of inventing different monikers to fit each sound.

In 1971, with fellow composer Jean Kluger, he created a briefly popular dance song called Yamasuki and from the reaction it garnered, decided to extend the idea to a full album. The unerring execution of the concept is a joy in both musical and visual terms. There is a beautiful symmetry between the disparate elements. It's shamelessly fun but never trite or kitsch. All kinds of innovations make the music engaging. The sophisticated grooves that underpin the hypnotic chants are ahead of their time. The fatback drum beats are class. The album leans heavily into his classical training: live piano threads through nearly every track, while harp, mbira, bass clarinet, and cello add organic resonance to his trademark drum & bass, footwork, and broken-beat structures. Rather than locking into loops, the songs unfold in long, free-flowing arcs - rhythms mutating mid-phrase, melodies resurfacing in unexpected places, arrangements. — (via Bandwagon)

—

This line from Patti Smith was going round and round Felix Manuel’s head as he gradually constructed Under Tangled Silence, his first album in six years and a record of a literal creative rebirth. Felix originally began it in earnest in 2020 Covid lockdown, but a catastrophic hard-drive meltdown destroyed almost all his work and sent him close to psychic collapse himself. However, ultimately this pushed him to rebuild from scratch and in so doing to confront and reassess every part of his musical and psychological processes.

The result is utterly extraordinary. Felix was a child prodigy as an instrumentalist and his advanced musicality has always been prominent in his music, but here he has put himself front and centre as pianist, harpist and more. And this sense of exposure as a performer interweaves with an unflinching emotional openness too. Where sometimes electronic production as advanced as this can use intellect and techniques as shields from soul-baring, this is the sound of someone who can boldly say “I feel things, I cry all the time, and I'm not afraid to say it or show it in the music.”

But this doesn’t mean there’s a move away from the soundsystems and dancefloors where Felix made his name as a uniquely innovative vinyl DJ. Even just in the opening track “A Tune for Us”, minimalist piano ripples and jazz drumming flow into the breaks of vintage jungle – and as the structure of the LP unfolds, a deep ambient meditation like “Hold” can sit very naturally in between the futurist dancehall of “L’Ancienne” and the high-definition acid house mind movie of “Galaxy in Silence”. In fact, as with the hands-on musicianship, that gutsy big-speaker electronic impact is delivered with more certainty, more expertise, more personal flourishes than ever. And all of those elements are more integrated than ever too: the sound of a total musical personality emerging afresh is truly something to behold. An already remarkable talent has been refreshed, reborn and is making the music of his life. — (via Label)

—

As an artist, Djrum is extremely difficult to define. The press notes pin him as a “child prodigy.” His style refuses definition. He is fundamentally a very talented musician, one who has absorbed electronic music in all its forms. The central form that percussion takes across the eleven offerings is that of broken beats. Crunched cymbals and shattered snares are tossed over the compositions, rhythms giving texture rather than being points of pivot. Instead, it is Manuel’s instrumentation and choice of tool that is at the album’s core.

Under Tangled Silence is a lost album that has been found, a reconstructed work made whole from fragments. Born in pain, the collection is a triumph of Djrum’s musicality and his tireless effort to revive and reimagine what was gone. An immensely absorbing and original work, an accomplishment of desire and dexterity. — (via Igloo)

—

Under Tangled Silence, Manuel’s third album, pulls off a similar feat, but to subtler, more poetic effect. Like his DJ sets, it draws from all corners of his musical universe, channeling his classical piano training as much as his life-changing moments at London squat raves. But unlike the rowdy melee of his DJing, Under Tangled Silence distills these sounds into something fluid, seamless, and technically virtuosic. His rhythmic finesse drives most of the album, but this isn’t exactly a dance record; it’s a mercurial survey of what sound like Manuel’s deepest emotions, delivered with a level of nuance that’s rare in club music.

At the heart of the album is a deft synthesis of wholly different musical traditions. Manuel has played piano since the age of seven, but only gradually wove the instrument into his records. In 2016, he told an interviewer that the piano parts on his Forgetting EP had been “very much composed rather than improvised,” adding that improvisation had “yet to filter its way into my production properly.” Here, piano is the album’s lead instrument, much of it seemingly off the cuff. (Manuel says that “Waxcap,” the album’s second track, began as a jazzy improv he later developed further.) — (via Pitchfork)

↓
Label: Houndstooth
Format: 2 x Vinyl, 12", 33 ⅓ RPM, Album
Released: 2025
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno, Broken Beat, Drum n Bass, IDM, Ambient

File under: TAV Essential Listening
File under: Electronic // Ambient / Experimental / IDM
⦿

["Genre - Ambient","Genre - Broken Beat","Genre - Drum n Bass","Genre - Electronic","Genre - IDM","Genre - Techno","LP","New Arrivals","TAV Essential Listening","TAV Essential Listening - Electronica","Vinyl
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
Truck – Surprise! As Parker shares: “2025 was a very difficult year for me and my family. Dealing with being displaced from the Eaton fires for eight months, and the kind of toll that instability took on my family’s mental health and general outlook, coupled with Donald Trump being back in office and basically making life miserable for everyone… There was a lot of sadness and despair. But feeling the sense of community that we created with our concert, and later hearing the recording, seeing the beautiful footage that had been shot and the photographs of such joy to be back in that space and to be making music again: It was a very happy moment. So I called the record Happy Today. It’s meant to be a statement of joy.”

The past two years have been productive and busy as ever for Parker, who has long been a prominent player within a wide-range of music communities, jazz and beyond. In 2025 alone, he released new music and toured with his long-standing experimental rock band Tortoise, and brought the ETA IVtet in for an NPR Tiny Desk performance. Additionally, Parker and two other members of the IVet — Butterss and Johnson — are featured on Flea's solo debut album released March 27 on Nonesuch Records. The album, Honora, also was produced by Johnson.

Happy Today is the ETA IVtet’s first recording made outside of the now-shuttered, widely-beloved Los Angeles micro-club ETA. Part laboratory, part low-stakes proving ground, ETA was where the band’s collective sound coalesced over the course of a storied seven-year Monday night residency that yielded two critically-acclaimed records — 2022’s Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy and 2024’s The Way Out of Easy.

With Happy Today, that sound — honed in such an intimate setting — is scaled up for a much larger audience and space at Lodge Room. But the essential formula remains the same, and has the same hypnotic, deeply-tuned listening effect. The almost alchemical musical communication creates a feeling of connection not only between the band members but also between the band and their audience – an ongoing trust exercise that invites listeners to become part of the exchange, and experience the joy of deep listening. — (via Label)

—

The first thing you notice in the opening moments of Happy Today is the amount of space. Hard-panned to the left and bathed in room tone, Jeff Parker’s round, resonant guitar notes have a decay tail long enough to activate the snare wires in Jay Bellerose’s kit. When Anna Butterss strikes their upright bass, the sound spreads like ink spilled on linen; when listening in headphones, you can feel it vibrate in your temples, and it’s heavy enough to trick you into thinking the ground must have shaken as well. Josh Johnson sustains a long, golden drone on his saxophone, and when he captures a loop of it, it’s as if a second Josh Johnson takes the cue and doubles the note from 10 feet away. Three minutes into “Like Swimwear,” as the ETA IVtet comes into its power, you can almost map the players’ stage positions and the dimensions of the venue, as the reflections suggest a high ceiling and considerable distance between its walls.

Happy Today is just as remarkably hypnotic as the IVtet’s previous documents, but it’s perhaps more impressive to hear how commanding they’ve become as a unit. On both sidelong tracks, they take their time to establish a vibe, each member finding the right time to add another layer. “Like Swimwear” starts with Parker plucking a delicate figure, eventually sustaining certain notes to build a delicate, droning chord. Johnson follows suit, but plays a dueling figure, as Butterss and Bellerose methodically add more accents into the rhythmic backbone. Eventually, the two fully lock together, allowing Parker and Johnson the space to wriggle around, sometimes finding the cracks and crevices in the motorik churn, other times enveloping it in clouds of pure tone. Johnson experiments with chorus and reverb effects, giving his saxophone the impression of fading in and out of view. — (via Pitchfork)

↓
Label: International Anthem Recording Company
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 2026
Genre: Jazz, Folk, World, & Country

File under: International Anthem Recording Company
⦿

["Genre - Contemporary Jazz","Genre - Folk","Genre - World","Label - International Anthem Recording Company ‎","LP","New Arrivals","Vinyl
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title"]}]}]}
